Forget the Sabbath

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.  Exodus 20:8 (NIV)

Yesterday, Sunday December 6, 2009, the United States Senate was in an unusual Sunday session.  The U.S. Constitution, in Article I Section 7 Paragraph 2, the "Sundays Excepted" clause excludes Sundays from being a normal legislative workday.  Only on rare occassions has either chamber of the U.S. Congress been in session on a Sunday for its entire 220 year history.

So what was the matter of great importance that demanded blowing off church for state?  Had the United States been the victim of another massive terrorist attack?  Was the economy on the verge of collapse?  Had our Nation been invaded by a foreign military?  Had a region of the country been the unfortunate recipient of a natural disaster?

None of these was the case.  No, the reason the U.S. Senate decided to skip the Sabbath was so Senator Harry Reid could keep his pledge to have a bill on President Obama's desk to destroy the health care system in the United States by the time Congress adjourns for Christmas!  I guess while most of us may dream of a white Christmas with chestnuts roasting on an open fire, the Democrats are more interested in Grandma getting run over by a reindeer so that they can claim their scheme to nationalize the health care system is budget neutral.

I guess its a good thing that Christmas falls on a Friday this year.  Senator Reid and his Democrat collegues may have decided to skip Christmas this year if it had fallen on a Sunday.  That would have been a great day to debate cap and trade!  I wonder if Santa will have to pay an Obese tax under government-run health care?  They just might deny him treatment when he gets sick.
